Seven were wounded by gunshot fire in New Orleans on Mardi Gras Day during a parade in the Garden District.
There was no violence on Camp Shield in Baghdad, where Phin and I documented the first Mardi Gras Parade in Iraq, put on by the LA National Guard. For some residents of the camp, it was their first taste of Mardi Gras, including all the private security guards from Uganda. For a moment one could forget they were in Iraq.
Reading headlines on Yahoo last night brought the state of New Orleans back to mind.
These items were sent to the soldiers with the efforts of Soldiers' Angels and people in our wonderful state of Louisiana!

May NO SOLDIER go unloved
So, glad that the soldiers got a break from the stress of their mission and was able to celebrate Mardi Gras! Thank you sooo much for posting the pictures...it enables us to feel closer to them.
ReplyDeleteMy brother is there.
We were in Uptown N.O. for Endymions's pre-parade party then went downtown for the parade. We were in the Garden District for Bacchus, Proteus and Orpheus. All of these parades were spectacular!! I'm a little prejudice about Endymion being one of the best since I am a past Queen!!! Hahaha!!! Another great Mardi Gras was had by all of my family and friends!!! Heard about the shootings after Mardi Gras....
ReplyDeleteWonderful slice of military life that we don't get to see in the mainstream media in which I'm a part of. Glad there were no casualties like in NOLA...I was blocks away from the shooting at the time and glad I didn't get a cap in the ass. Thank-you for your refreshing report from Iraq. Margaret Bourke-White and Dickey Chappelle would be proud.
